Three cruise ships and a yacht have all docked, Thursday, at the cruise terminal of the Port Authority in Getxo. They are, namely, the cruise ships ‘Marina’, of the company Oceania (NHG), the ‘Resident Lady’, of Virgin Voyages, and ‘Le Dumont D’Urbille’, of the shipowner Ponan. The first two are operated by Incargo and the third by Noatum. The yacht ‘Akula’ will be berthed alongside them.
These four vessels arrived between 07.30 and 08.00 in the morning. Whilst two of them departed between 12:00 and 17:00, a third remained one more day until Friday, and the fourth left on Sunday. A total of 4,000 passengers arrived in the Basque Country through the Port of Bilbao, accompanied by 2,000 crew members.
In 2024, September will be the month with the most cruise activity. Two more ships are expected to arrive in the next few days, bringing the total number of cruise ships to call at the terminal of the Port of Bilbao in Getxo this month to twenty, and the number of passengers who have had the chance in September to discover what Bilbao, Bizkaia and the Basque Country in general has to offer in terms of culture, architecture, nature and gastronomy to 25,000.
Among those cruise ships with the largest capacity is a regular caller to the port of Bilbao, the ‘Anthem of the Seas’, of Royal Caribbean International (RCCL) and operated by Noatum, with 4,500 cruise passengers on board. Others include the ‘Nieuw Statendam’, of the Holland America Line company and operated by Toro y Betolaza, which arrived at the Getxo 1 Dock with 2,610 passengers, and the ‘Resident Lady’ itself, which previously called in Bilbao on 11 September with 2,553 tourists on board.
The excellent figures for the month of September confirm the success and popularity of the Port of Bilbao for yet another season, in a sector as competitive as the cruise sector, thanks mainly to the excellent services and infrastructure the port has to offer for this type of traffic and the undeniable tourist attraction of the area. This year, around 80 cruise ships are expected to dock, with the season ending in mid-December.
