Relations between the Ports of Moerdijk and Bilbao are particularly close, and visits between the two are frequent. On this occasion, after two years, a delegation from Moerdijk has recently come to visit the Port of Bilbao, accompanied by the Dutch logistics operator VDH, which conducts a lot of business between the Netherlands and the Iberian Peninsula.
In 2023, trade between Spain and the Netherlands amounted to 14 million tonnes of goods. In terms of products, trade in chemical products and exports of fruit and vegetables is particularly noteworthy. 31% of this trade is generated in the hinterland of the Port of Bilbao, which has great potential for growth in market share, as 46% of trade between Spain and the Netherlands is by road.
In 2023, traffic between the Port of Bilbao and the Netherlands amounted to 1.6 million tonnes of goods, with containerised cargo up 7%.
The Dutch delegation visited the port facilities and showed interest in the open innovation activity promoted by Bilbao PortLab and in the cold storage facilities for products at controlled temperatures.
