The work is part of the BilbOPS project, which aims to reduce pollutant emissions and noise levels from ships at berth
At its meeting today, the Council of Ministers, at the proposal of the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, has given the green light for the 55,403,509.78 euro investment for the development of the electrical infrastructure in the port of Bilbao to enable ships to connect to the onshore power grid when berthed.
As part of its energy transition plan towards a carbon neutral scenario in 2050, one of the main objectives of the Bilbao Port Authority is to reduce pollutant emissions from ships at berth and improve air quality in the port. To do so, the necessary infrastructure must be in place to enable the vessels to connect to the onshore power supply during their stay in the port of Bilbao, making it possible for them to switch off their auxiliary engines, as part of the BilbOPS project.
Specifically, the electrical infrastructure covered by this contract consists of an electricity substation and distribution lines, including a high-voltage subsea cable for power distribution and the equipment required to adapt the supply to voltage and frequency requirements, as well as comprehensive operation and maintenance services. The equipment will be installed at Docks A1, A2, A6, AZ3 and Getxo 2 and 3.
