Port accessThe Spanish Government Cabinet has approved a royal decree whereby the Iron Dock at Portugalete has been declared Heritage of Cultural Interest within the monument category.
The Iron Dock, which celebrated its 125th anniversary last September, is an exceptional example of iron architecture. It was designed by Master civil engineer Evaristo de Churruca Brunet, and it solved the navigability problem in the Port of Bilbao. In turn, the development of port activity at Bilbao was favoured since vessels of great tonnage were able to sail with any tide.
The Iron Dock has also presented important scientific, technical and economic values throughout its existence, as well as carrying out a significant social and cultural function as a place where local inhabitants can walk and gather.
The Iron Dock at Portugalete forms part of Spain’s National Heritage and is under the jurisdiction of the Port Authority of Bilbao.
