The Portugalete Iron Dock, considered to be a fine example of iron architecture due to its uniqueness and exceptional beauty, will be 125 years old on 12 September. The Dock was designed by Evaristo de Churruca y Brunet with a view to finishing with the fearsome bar, a bank of quicksand which was a serious obstacle for shipping at the mouth of the River Nervión and caused numerous accidents and shipwrecks.
Thus, its building marked the beginning of a new era in the history of the Port of Bilbao, which ceased to be one of the most dangerous on the Bay of Biscay and became one of the best and safest ports in Spain.
Para celebrar este aniversario, el Ayuntamiento de Portugalete ha organizado una exposición en la Torre Salazar que permanecerá abierta al público del 12 de septiembre al 28 de octubre.
