Port accessLast year, Bilbao Port’s traffic with the American continent reached the figure of 7.8 million tons, which is 5% more than in 2010.
This traffic accounts for almost 25% of Bilbao Port’s entire traffic. By areas, North America accounts for 11% of the traffic, South America for 8.5% and Central America for 5%.
Focusing on the traffic between Bilbao Port and South America, this amounted to 2.7 million tons, 65% of which were imports and mainly soya beans, natural gas and steel products. The principal exports are chemical products, steel products and machinery. By packs, 42% of the traffic involves solid bulk, 27% liquid and 20% container goods.
By countries, Brazil accounts for 43% of this traffic, ahead of Peru with 23%, Argentina with 12% and Venezuela with a further 12%.
Traffic with Brazil
In 2011 traffic with Brazil rose to around 1.2 million tons, growing 28% over the previous year. Brazil is the second country in dry cargo for Bilbao Port and is only surpassed by the United Kingdom, and it is also the leader in solid bulk. The main goods imported from Brazil are soya beans and steel products, whereas exports focus mainly on chemical products, far ahead of machinery and tools.
