The Port Authority of Bilbao has set up an Integrated Quality, Prevention and Environment System to be able to satisfy the demands and expectations of all the groups of interest it has relations with, acknowledge the right for health protection in the workplace and control environmental impacts.
In order to develop these commitments, the Port of Bilbao adopted the management models set out in norms ISO 9001, ISO 45001 and ISO 14001.
Ports social integration has an environmental dimension inasmuch as it interacts with human activities. In practice, this especially includes air, water, noise and light contamination problems. However, port environmental management is far more-reaching than the problems derived from the negative external ones associated with port activities: it also comprises conservation ecology, climatic change and other questions.
In 2014, the Port Authority of Bilbao showed its good will to advance in assuming this social responsibility and voluntarily adhered to Regulation EC Nº1221/2009) Eco Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS), and on 19 September 2014 was inscribed in the EMAS Register with number ES-EU-000082.
The obligations derived from EMAS Regulation III are in accordance with the demands of the social environment: transparency, accessibility, capacity for dialogue and for providing solutions to the expectations of the groups of interest.
