At its meeting today, the Board of Directors of the Port Authority of Bilbao has appointed Antonio Aiz Salazar, a professional of high standing with technical experience in the fields of transport, infrastructure and port management, as its new Managing Director. Since 2020, Antonio Aiz has been Managing Director of the Basque Water Agency (URA).
Antonio Aiz has a degree in Labour Sciences and Labour Relations/Social Sciences, and several master’s degrees in the field of public administration. He has a long and proven professional career, mainly in the public sector, where he has held posts in the Basque Government such as Vice-Minister of Infrastructure and Transport (2017-2020), Vice-Minister of Transport (2013-2017) and Vice-Minister of Transport and Public Works (1998-2005), as well as General Secretary of Euskal Trenbide Sarea (2005-2013), President of Eusko Trenbideak, S.A. (over different periods from 1998 to 2020) and President of SORTU-3, a public company for industrial promotion (1995-1997).
In his professional career, and due to its direct link with port management, special mention should be made of his position as a member of the Board of Directors of the Port Authority of Bilbao (over various periods of time, totalling more than seven years) and of the Board of Directors of the Port Authority of Pasaia (over various periods of time, totalling more than ten years), as well as his position as Basque Government Vice-Minister of Transport, the ministry to which all the ports under the ownership of the Basque Autonomous Region were both organisationally and operationally dependent. In addition, he has held
senior positions in the management of the Basque rail network, particularly in the development of the future Southern Railway Bypass of the Port of Bilbao, and has played a key role in various administrative processes and projects taken forward in the Port of Bilbao in his capacity as Managing Director of URA.
Antonio Aiz will take up the post vacated by Carlos Alzaga, who has been appointed as Head of the Area for Infrastructure and Territorial Development in the Bizkaia Provincial Council.
