The agreement includes the restoration of a 350-metre stretch of the docks and the dredging of the river in the surrounding area.
Under an agreement signed today with the Barakaldo Town Council and the Port Authority of Bilbao, BILBAO Ría 2000 is to redevelop the Galindo docks in Barakaldo. The agreement also provides for the dredging of the river in the vicinity of the docks by the Port Authority.
Those present at the signing of the agreement included Juan Mari Aburto, Mayor of Bilbao and President of BILBAO Ria 2000; Amaia del Campo, Mayoress of Barakaldo and Board Member of BILBAO Ria 2000; Ricardo Barkala, President of the Port Authority of Bilbao and Board Member of BILBAO Ria 2000; and Ángel María Nieva, General Manager of BILBAO Ria 2000.
The scope of the project includes a 350-metre stretch of dock between the Portu wharf and the mouth of the River Galindo, which is currently in a state of serious disrepair. Under the redevelopment agreement, and with a view to making it possible for vessels to berth and to be boarded in the future, whether for river transport or for recreational, tourist or leisure purposes, the geometry of the docks will remain unchanged.
In turn, around 30,600 cubic metres of riverbed material will be dredged in the area adjacent to the docks, together with a further 48,150 cubic metres in the Portu dock to allow for the future nautical and recreational use of the area. These works will be performed by the Port Authority of Bilbao.
The area around these docks forms part of the future Riverside Park planned by BILBAO Ría 2000, which involves the construction of facilities for water sports, a marina and a floating jetty. Furthermore, the pedestrian and cycle path that the Bizkaia Provincial Council is set to build between Erandio and Barakaldo, crossing the river, is also planned to run through this area.
