Construcciones Navales, Celulosas y Siderúrgicas, S.A. (Navacel) has begun loading operations of eight large suction anchors for transport from the Port of Bilbao to an off-shore gas platform that is being built off the coast of Israel.
Six of the anchors are 9.5 metres in diameter and 20 metres long and the other two are 14 metres long. The anchors will be loaded in a
special barge alongside the quay that the company owns on the Bilbao river estuary in Axpe (Erandio). Given the complexity of moving such large loads, the operation in which 20 people are working is expected to last approximately 10 days. The barge will be towed by a sea-going tug and will take 28 days to reach its destination.
For the manufacture of the suction anchors and other similar pieces, the payroll of Construcciones Navales, Celulosas y Siderúrgicas, S.A. has, over the last 5 months, increased by 16% and subcontractors have occupied an average of 40 people. With the new installations in Axpe (Erandio) particularly suited to the manufacture of major pieces of equipment thanks to the height of the buildings, the capacity of the cranes and their strategic position on the waterfront with its own quay, the company hopes, in the future, to expand its order book and maintain and increase employment in the area.
