The Port Authority of Bilbao has completed the works to increase the depths of and reinforce Axpe dock, which is one of the Port of Bilbao’s river docks situated in Erandio. These works will optimise the operational and berthing conditions of the vessels providing services for the industrial companies that are located in this zone and are specialised in the production of heavy, large dimension capital goods; thus they will be able to increase their competitiveness and capture new traffic. In turn, this will result in the growth of seaborne exports.
In specific terms, the depths in this zone have increased from 3 to 7 metres, which enables larger vessels to enter. Likewise, dock surface area destined for pre-embarkation storage has increased by 2,300m², and a new 115-metre berthing line will be able to accommodate vessels of up to 5,000 DWT.
The Port Authority has invested 3.4 million euros on the works, which lasted a year, and a further 400,000 will be spent on paving the dock.
This project has been co-financed by the European Commission as part of the TEN-T programme for 2012, which has provided 10% of the total investment.
