The new cruise berth being constructed by the Port Authority of Bilbao at Getxo has begun to take shape. The initial filling works started in October last year, and now, the first of the eight caissons making up the berthing line has been placed in position.
These huge concrete caissons, built inside the Port itself, are 44 metres long, 15 wide and 16 deep; they weigh approximately 7,700 tonnes. In all some 31,500 m3 of concrete will be used in their construction, while the total volume of filling material from different sources used was 380.000 m3.
The new pier, which is located next to the existing one, will have a 354-metre berthing line and 11-metre depth. The works were awarded in tender for
13.8 million euros and are scheduled for completion by the end of January 2014.
