Port taking part in Trade Mission organised by the Basque Government and the three Basque Territorial Councils on the occasion of Euskadi participating in the Smithsonian Folklife Festival Washington
The Port Authority of Bilbao is an active participant in the Economic and Trade Mission to the United States organised by the Autonomous Basque Government and the three Basque Territorial Councils, which has been organised to coincide with the presence of Euskadi (the Basque Country) at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington D.C.
The festival will be held from 29 June to 4 July, and from 7-10 July – ten days in all. The Basque culture is the first from the south of Europe to be invited to the Folklife Festival and will be the best showcase for the country. In parallel, the main Basque port, Bilbao, will hold contacts with shippers, and visit the Port of Baltimore to present its services and competitive advantages in a country that is already its first transoceanic market.
In fact, Bilbao is the gateway to trade between the USA and Spain, having 26% of seaborne traffic between the two countries, which makes it the leading port in the American
market.
In 2015, total Port of Bilbao traffic rose to 32.4 million tonnes, of which 2.8 million, equivalent to 9% of traffic, had USA as its origin or destination. Last year, Bilbao traffic grew by 5%, while only with USA, it increased 13%.
The main traffic with USA is petrol, gasoil, soy beans, iron and steel products, building materials, fuel-oil, machinery and wine and beverages in general.
