SLP starts up the first rail service for bulk solids in the Port of Bilbao
A joint collaborative effort by Servicios Logísticos Portuarios (SLP), Harineras Villamayor, the Monzón Intermodal Terminal of the SAMCA Group, the Bilbao Port Authority and Renfe has made it possible to launch today the first rail service for the transport of bulk solids from the Port of Bilbao. The inaugural operation consisted of a convoy with 708 tonnes of wheat bound for Aragon.
The train departed in the early hours of Wednesday 27 November with 14 wagons belonging to Renfe, which also provided the traction unit. With this operation, SLP and the Port have reached a new milestone in their commitment to full intermodality, and can now offer a complete range of rail services which, until now, was limited to containers, breakbulk and bulk liquids.
The destination of the convoy is the La Armentera industrial estate in Huesca, which is home to the Monzón Intermodal Terminal, located on the main rail freight corridor and one of the main hinterlands of the ports of the Atlantic and Mediterranean Arc. From there, the cargo will be shipped to Harineras Villamayor, the end recipient of the goods.
This initiative consolidates SLP’s position as a key reference in the Port of Bilbao. Last year, the company directly or indirectly handled more than 2.4 million tonnes of freight and acted as a shipping agent for 265 vessels, figures which it expects to improve this year in view of the trend in traffic.
