The Port Authority of Bilbao thus concludes the enlargement of the Outer Abra to encourage ro-ro and project cargo traffic
At its meeting today, the Council of Ministers, on the proposal of the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, authorised the conclusion of the works contract for the Central Pier of the extension of the port of Bilbao in the Outer Abra (2nd phase), for 55,444,180.23 euros.
Once this project has been completed, the Port Authority of Bilbao will have concluded the enlargement of the port in the Outer Abra, works on which began in the 1990s. The end goal is to cater for and encourage ro-ro and wind power traffic, components for which are manufactured in the port’s hinterland.
Specifically, the works provide for the construction of two new docks: Dock A3, 664 metres long, and Dock A4, extended to 347 metres. Both docks have a draft of 21 metres, and the works will generate a new surface area of some 31.2 hectares.
This project, which has obtained a favourable environmental impact statement, forms part of the current 2023-27 investment plan of the Port Authority of Bilbao, which is included in the Business Plan drawn up in agreement with Puertos del Estado.
