As in the 2021 edition, the photographic legacy of Germán Elorza, preserved in the Historical Archive of the Basque Country, will once again feature in the now traditional calendar published every year by the Port Authority of Bilbao.
On this occasion, the thirteen photographs selected were taken in Bilbao and Ezkerraldea and show scenes of daily life and port activity between 1930 and 1970.
A native of Bilbao by adoption, Germán Elorza (1910-1983) captured all aspects of social life in Bilbao and Bizkaia with his camera until his retirement in 1975. He began his professional career as a correspondent for Prensa Española and Prensa Gráfica in Madrid, moving on to the daily paper La Tarde and later to the evening newspaper Hierro, where he spent almost his entire career. His huge collection of more than 100,000 photos is kept in the Historical Archive of the Basque Country.
By selecting Germán Elorza, the Port Authority has taken another step forward in its efforts to recover the work of great photographers, as has been the case in previous calendars with Eulalia Abaitua and Telesforo de Errazquin.
The calendar will be on general sale to the public in the Itsasmuseum Bilbao, and the selected photos will be on display in an exhibition on the esplanade of the Maritime Museum from this Tuesday, 21 December, onwards.
