The Port Authority of Bilbao EMAS Environmental Statement 2019 has been validated by Lloyd’s Register, and has received the approval for its certification under EMAS standards (Ihobe) to be renewed.
With this positive step, the Port continues to roll out its environmental policy and its commitment as a driver within the port community in the use of good environmental practices. Likewise, the Port of Bilbao is a pioneer in environmental management and is promoting different initiatives aligned to the key areas selected by the port system to contribute to Agenda 2030.
First port to obtain EPD certification
In 2019, Bilbao became the first port in the world to obtain an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) certification, based on the life cycle assessment of port services. Around fifty companies from the community of the port of Bilbao – of all kinds and different types of traffic and/or services – have collaborated jointly to obtain this certification, which covers the environmental impact of the port’s activities. To do so, the port has benefited from specialist advice provided by Tecnalia research and technological development centre.
