The Port of Bilbao has today successfully conducted a marine pollution drill in the Outer Abra.
The drill, coordinated by the Port Authority, involved enacting the various protocols and procedures set out in the Inland Maritime Plan for accidental marine pollution, with the participation of the Port’s own vessels and those of the mooring companies, tugboats and the Civil Guard. Thus, the resources and professionals available to the Port were all deployed to deal with potential leaks or spills at sea.
The Port of Bilbao is at the forefront in Europe in terms of being equipped with its own resources to deal with this type of emergency. This equipment includes six containment booms, with a total length of 2,050 metres, which are further complemented by the booms of industrial companies with premises in the port, such as Petronor, Tepsa and Esergui, as well as the resources of the mooring company and Ibaizabal Tugboats.
This type of drill is conducted on a regular basis, not only to test the effectiveness of the measures included in the Inland Maritime Plan for accidental marine pollution in the Port of Bilbao, but also the coordination between the different players and their capacity to respond to the incident.
