The President of the Bilbao Port Authority, Ricardo Barkala, has tendered his resignation to the Basque Government, both in writing and verbally to Imanol Pradales, the Lehendakari (First Minister of the Basque Country). Appointed President of the Port Authority in July 2018, Barkala has stated that, after a period of reflection, “I have come to the conclusion that this is the right time to initiate a change in the Presidency of the Port of Bilbao”.
“Although I am still motivated and committed to the projects and challenges facing the Port of Bilbao,” he explained, “I think it’s important to know when the time is right to step down”. Amongst the reasons for taking this decision, Barkala mentioned “the cruising speed that the Basque Government, led by the Lehendakari Pradales, is now reaching. The Lehendakari is designing a project for the country for the next 8 to 12 years, and it’s important that he has a good team to accompany him on this journey”.
“I’m leaving with a bittersweet taste in my mouth”, Barkala added, “because I feel good and up for a challenge, but after giving the issue considerable thought I believe it to be the best decision for the port, for the country and for myself”. He also expressed his willingness to help the new person in the post during the transition period and to remain “at the Lehendakari’s disposal for any matter in which I might be of assistance”.
