The works to extend the AZ-1 Quay in the port of Bilbao have begun with the start of the dredging works to open the trench for the foundations of the caissons that will make up the future quay.
The Port Authority of Bilbao awarded the aforementioned works on 6 July to the joint venture formed by the companies Rover Maritime, Construcciones Murias and Ciomar for an amount of approximately EUR 27.4 million, with a completion period of 18 months.
This action consists of the extension of the current AZ-1 Quay towards the mouth of the dock, making it possible to generate almost 50,000 m² of new port esplanade and to extend its berthing line by some 250 metres. Once this new infrastructure is operational, it will help to relieve the burden on the saturated adjoining area, which is mainly used for bulk solid cargo.
